Bristol Civil Justice Centre

In brief

Developed by Miller Construction, the new build civil justice centre in Bristol comprised of eight civil courts, six hearing rooms and one family proceedings room. A six storey building, the plant room housing all associated equipment to service the centre, including chillers, pumps and air conditioning units, was situated on the roof. Effective isolation of the area was essential to prevent the vibrations from becoming structural noise and travelling into the building, which could potentially have caused interference with court proceedings and intelligibility of evidence.

Harris Academy

In brief

A £2.2 million expansion programme at the Harris Academy, Merton, incorporated a new post-16 study block, which necessitated a flexible use area for the sixth form pupils to utilise across a wide range of education activities including quiet study, examinations, wet play and light sports.

A first floor multi-purpose room was included in the building design and conditions demanded a structural isolation system be installed that would both minimise nuisance noise penetrating the room and prevent vibrations caused by high footfall activities travelling into the classrooms below. Main contractor, Mansell required an anti-vibration solution that would deliver a natural frequency below 15Hz for the duration of the installation without impeding on pupils' learning experiences.

Clapham Junction

In brief

To help take pressure off local GP surgeries, a new walk-in health centre was required within a high footfall area close to Clapham Junction. As a densely populated area, the only available space for the development was within five railway arches located directly beneath the railway track beds.

To ensure the building was fit for purpose, main contractor, Osborne required a bespoke anti-vibration solution that would deliver superior performance at very low frequencies. Moreover, planning conditions demanded that the vibrations generated from the passing trains be isolated and the area effectively damp proofed to achieve long-lasting sound abatement.

Granville Gardens, Ealing Common

In brief

Granville Gardens is a contemporary residential development of 51 spacious units situated in Ealing developed by Linden Homes. As the residential apartments were being constructed directly above a new bar/restaurant, they had to be treated with a very low frequency solution to ensure the building was fit for purpose and prevent vibrations from travelling through the structure and emanating as nuisance noise. As a result, acoustic consultants, Alan Saunders Associates, specified a floating floor to attenuate frequencies of 25Hz with 95% isolation efficiency. This high performance specification was necessary to control the vibrations that would be generated once the bar was occupied.
